GOSSETT, Henry, of VA and Barren and Hart Counties, KY

Henry Gossett was born 4 Dec 1818[1] in Martinsville, Henry Co VA, the son of Cavin and Mary (Phifer) Gossett.[2] He died in Hart Co KY on 2 Jun 1912.[3] He was buried at the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery; his grave stone has no dates, just his Civil War unit.[4]

On 28 Nov 1843 in Barren Co KY, he married Elizabeth Pedigo. After her death, he married Elizabeth Hester, the widow of Birt Amos.[5] She was with him in 1870 and 1880, but he was called widowed in 1900 and 1910. It is likely he married a third time, as a widow survived him and filed for a widow’s pension.[6]

Elizabeth Pedigo was born 23 Nov 1824[7] in Barren Co KY, the daughter of William Pedigo[8] and his wife Elizabeth Cliff. She died 2 Mar 1861 in Hart Co KY.[9]

Elizabeth (Hester) (Amos) Gossett was in Logan Co KY in 1850 and Hart County in 1860. Her daughter Margaret Jane Amos married James H Bingham, Sr., before 1850; stepfather Henry Gossett was with the Binghams in 1900 and 1910. Margaret’s parents are named on her death certificate.[10]

Henry Gossett served in the Union forces during the Civil War.[11] He was in Co D, 33rd Regiment, KY Infantry, then transferred to Co K 26th KY Infantry.

[5] From Karen Kane, at https://alvispat.wordpress.com/gossett-henry-of-va-and-barren-and-hart-counties-ky/: Just a note about Henry Gossett – I would not have known that information (i.e., that Henry’s second wife was Elizabeth (Hester) Amos) if it had not been for my Great Grandmother telling me that Margaret’s stepfather was a Gossett. It was just a passing comment that I eventually followed up on. Glad I did since there isn’t much documentation to lead us to it.

Here is another bit of info she gave me about burials in New Hope Cemetery: (My notes in parenthesis)

“On right is Grandpa Gossett (Step father of James Harrison Bingham’s mother.)

On his left is, Aunt Lou Sanders, Hartford Sanders, and her son, Leonard.

James Harrison (Bingham)’s Mother and Gwendolyn Bingham at left of gate close to the fence.”

Another note on Henry Gossett – The following is from the diary of a local Dr. Godbey (Source: posted online by Sandy Gorin, the well-known researcher of Barren County, KY history):

From Dr. Godbey’s Diaries

Tuesday, April 16, 1912

Visited Henry Gossett, Sr. at Mr. Bingham’s. He is quite old, 93 years!

Claud broke up the garden. We got a letter from Hallie. I paid Claud one dollar to break up garden; paid Taylor one dollar, bal. on hauling corn. That makes us even, thank the Lord. We wrote Hallie a letter today.

[6] So why was an application filed for a widow’s pension in 1910, which by the way was before he died? Was it thought a widowed veteran could file for a widower’s pension?

  1. It felt so good to find family. I came from Henry Gosset 5 time great grandfather.

  2. Hi Kathy –
Margaret Amos Bingham (b. 10 Jan 1844 – d. 24 July 1923) was Henry Gossett’s step-daughter. She was the daughter of Elizabeth HESTER and Birt AMOS.

Birt died possibly before 1850 and has been elusive. I found Elizabeth and Margaret in 1850 Logan County KY Census (Elizabeth, 22 and Margaret age 6). There is an Elizabeth Amos in Hart County KY Census in 1860, age 28. (By that time, Margaret had married James Bingham – abt 1859 – at age 15)

Elizabeth Hester Amos married Henry Gossett after 1861. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate.

Margaret Amos Bingham is my 3rd Great Grandmother.

(I also descend from the Pedigos in Barren County.)

    Hope that helps!

    • This is wonderful. I have considered that the family gave the deceased mother’s information at the 1870 and 1880 census, but Henry’s widow, according to pension docs, was Elizabeth Gossett.
      Now I know.
      Kathy

      • I have a copy of a long-ago letter written by Ramona Kane. Was she your grandmother?

  3. No, Kane is my married name. I married a Yankee, so all his family is in New England. We don’t have a Ramona anywhere in that line that I have found.

I am from Barren County originally and all my lines for the past 200 years are all in South-Central KY. Looks like our families have crossed paths. I have the Edward “Edwin” Pedigo line in my family on both sides and sometimes doubled up!

Just a note about Henry Gossett – I would not have known that information if it had not been for my Great Grandmother telling me that Margaret’s step-father was a Gossett. It was just a passing comment that I eventually followed up on. Glad I did since there isn’t much documentation to lead us to it.

    [Sandy Gorin’s] comments:
I found several Henry Gossetts on the KY Vital Records web site, but none of them appeared to be this Henry Gossett, Sr. I know nothing about him , but I would say that to live to 93 years of age at the turn of the century was a feat to be proud of. I think that, probably, Claud is Claud Dupree Monroe (29 Mar 1891 – 23 Aug 1951), who was the son of G. W. Taylor Monroe and Alice (McClure) Monroe. Hey Doc! Feels good to be even, right?
