Lorenzo Dow Huff[1] was born 12 Oct 1839[2] in Wayne Co KY, the son of George Washington and Malinda (Denton) Huff. He died 17 Dec 1912 in Crail Hope, Hart Co KY[3] and was buried in the Houk Cemetery, Metcalfe Co KY.[4]
On 30 Sep 1858, Lorenzo married Laura Frances Gentry in Hart Co KY.[5] After her death, he married second Isophene (Pierce) Clark, the daughter of William and Nancy Pierce and the widow of Harlan Clark.[6]
Laura Frances Gentry was born 25 May 1844 in Hart Co KY, the daughter of Benjamin and Emily (Martin) Gentry.[7] She died 13 Feb 1911 in Green Co KY and was buried in an unmarked grave in the Houk Cemetery.[8]
During the Civil War Lorenzo served in the United States Army, Co G 3 KY Cavalry, as a private in Turyman’s Independent KY Cavalry, 1862-1865.[9]
In the 1860 and 1870 censuses, Lorenzo was listed as a farmer. In 1860 his grandmother Mary S Denton was living with the young couple and their one-year-old daughter Mary, or Mollie. In 1880, he was listed as a photographer; in 1910 his occupation was “makes pictures.” Lorenzo and Laura joined by letter the Three Springs Baptist Church, 22 Sep 1865, and received a letter of dismission, March 1867.
With his second wife, Lorenzo fathered a posthumous child, Lorenza, who was born in 1913, the aunt of my great-grandmother, who was 26 at the time of the birth of this niece. Lorenza died in 1997, undoubtedly one of the last daughters of any Civil War soldier.

[2] Lorenzo Dow Huff, death certificate Reg. Dis. 6028, No. 20 (1912), Kentucky Bureau of Vital Statistics. His death certificate identifies his father, but is mistaken about his mother. Comparing the family’s censuses and death certificates of his older and younger brothers show that his mother was Malinda Denton, not Elizabeth Edwards. His grandmother Denton lived with Lorenzo and his family in 1860.
