BAGBY, Henry, of Powhatan Co VA

Henry Bagby was born about 1724 in St James Parish, Goochland Co VA,[1] son of John Bagby.

Henry’ wife Susannah has been called Susannah Steele , but without evidence that this writer has seen.[2] She is said to have been born ca 1727 and died as late as 1823.[3]

On 10 Jan 1763, Henry Bagby witnessed a deed in which Robert Bagby Sr and Robert Bagby Jr sold land in Cumberland Co VA to James Bagby.[4] In Powhatan Co VA, Henry sold land for five shillings to his son James Bagby on 14 Apr 1789.[5]

These Powhatan Co VA marriages probably involved children of Henry Bagby[6]:

Henry Bagby’s will was written and probated in 1790.[7]

The children of Henry and Susannah Bagby were:

2. Elizabeth BAGBY. Born on 3 Oct 1747.

3. Sarah BAGBY. Born on 3 Dec 1748. On 17 Nov 1772 when Sarah was 23, she married Luke WEBSTER, son of Nathaniel WEBSTER & Margaret STEELE. Born in 1746 in Goochland Co VA. Luke died in 1817. They had the following children:

In 1770 when Susannah was 19, she married Samuel WEBSTER, son of Nathaniel WEBSTER & Margaret STEELE, in Powhatan Co VA. Born on 10 Apr 1749 in Goochland Co VA. Samuel died in Franklin Co VA, on 24 Jan 1823. They had the following children:

If this is the same man, he had an earlier wife, as seen in his 1810 census in Buckingham Co VA: 30010/20010/26 slaves. On 2 May 1816 when Daniel was 53, he married Elizabeth COX in Powhatan Co VA. They had the following children:

9. James BAGBY. Born in 1765 in Powhatan Co VA. On 20 Dec 1784 when James was 19, he married Patty PRICE in Prince Edward Co VA. They had one known child:

Coincidentally, this family links three of my grandparents’ geographically disparate families: daughter Susannah was an ancestor of my Armstrongs[9]; Susannah and Sarah also married Websters, and Sarah had descendants who married Alvises[10]; son John’s descendants went to KY, where one of them married a sister of my Pedigo grandmother’s Martin ancestor.[11]

“At a Court held for Goochland County July 16, 1745 Henry Cox acknowledged this Deed to be his Act and Deed which was ordered to be Recorded Then Judith his Wife (She being first privately examined) relinquished her right of Dower in the Land by this Deed Conveyed which was also Ordered to be Recorded.”

[5] Deed: Henry Bagby to James Bagby, Deed Book 1, page 508, Powhatan Co VA: “This Indenture made this fourteenth day of April in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and Eighty nine Between Henry Bagby of the County of Powhatan of the one part and James Bagby of the county aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Henry Bagby for and in consideration of the Sum of Five Shillings current Money of Virginia (but more especially for the affection he hath for the said James Bagby his Son) the Receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge Hath Sold, Aliened, Remised, Enfeoffed and confirmed And by these presents doth grant bargain Sell Convey, Release and confirm unto the said James Bagby One certain Tract or parcell of Land lying and being in the County of Powhatan containing Fifty five Acres be the same more or less, and bounded as follows to witt, by the Lands of William Cox, John Cox, and Mahook Creek which said Fifty five Acres of Land lies on the Western Side the said Creek being part of the Land and plantation whereon the said Henry Bagby now lives To have and to hold the said granted Land and all and Singular the privileges, Advantages, and Appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining unto him the said James Bagby his Heirs or Assigns, to the only proper use and behoof of him the said James Bagby his Heirs or Assigns forever. Barry Wood posted this transcript with comments: “to my son John Bagbee, one Negro man slave named Han, to my son Daniel Bagbey, one Negro man named Joe Peter, one Negro man named Joe, one Negro girl named Little Pegg, one boy called Little Charles; a Feather Bed, Cow and Calf. to my son James Bagby, the tract of land where I now live, 200 acres, and one Negro Boy named Dick, one Negro girl named Sall, ..and a Saddle. to my son in law Henry Bagby, one Negro boy named Harry. to my daughter Sarah Webster, one Negro girl named Nancy to my daughter Susannah Webster, one Negro girl named Sylvia to my daughter Theodosha Flowers, one Negro girl named Lucy to my daughter Rebeccah Johnson, one Negro girl named Lydda. The rest of my estate is to be equally divided among my 8 children: John Bagby, Daniel Bagbey, James Bagbey, my son in law Henry Bagbey, Sarah Webster, Susannah Webster, Theodoshe Flowers, and Rebeccah Johnson. Executors: my friends Samuel Woodfin and William Clarke and my son James Bagbey. Witnesses: Williiam Clarke, Francis Hix, and James Bagbey Jr.” Those who acted as security for the Executors (James Bagbey and Samuel Woodfin) were James Bagby Sr and William Clarke.” The microfilm copy I read at the VA State Library was rather difficult to decipher in places, and I am indebted to Bev Green for some clarification on it. The will gives no clue as to the identity of Henry Bagby’s father. Possibly the James Bagby Sr who was designated as security on the administration of the estate was a brother, but that’s just a guess. Given that all of the daughters of Henry Bagby were already married by the time he made his will, Henry was presumably at least 55 years old when he wrote his will, and likely closer to 70. This makes him more or less the same generation as the John [Arthur] Bagby who married Theodosia Morris. From the fact that Henry Bagby named a daughter Theodosia I would not be surprised if Henry turns out to have been a brother of John Bagby of Louisa Couny, but I can offer no proof.
