Henry Gossett was born 4 Dec 1818 in Martinsville, Henry Co VA, the son of Cavin and Mary (Phifer) Gossett. He died in Hart Co KY on 2 Jun 1912. He was buried at the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery; his grave stone has no dates, just his Civil War unit.
On 28 Nov 1843 in Barren Co KY, he married Elizabeth Pedigo. After her death, he married Elizabeth Hester, the widow of Birt Amos. She was with him in 1870 and 1880, but he was called widowed in 1900 and 1910. It is likely he married a third time, as a widow survived him and filed for a widow’s pension.
Elizabeth (Hester) (Amos) Gossett was in Logan Co KY in 1850 and Hart County in 1860. Her daughter Margaret Jane Amos married James H Bingham, Sr., before 1850; stepfather Henry Gossett was with the Binghams in 1900 and 1910. Margaret’s parents are named on her death certificate.
Henry Gossett served in the Union forces during the Civil War. He was in Co D, 33rd Regiment, KY Infantry, then transferred to Co K 26th KY Infantry.

From Karen Kane, at https://alvispat.wordpress.com/gossett-henry-of-va-and-barren-and-hart-counties-ky/: Just a note about Henry Gossett – I would not have known that information (i.e., that Henry’s second wife was Elizabeth (Hester) Amos) if it had not been for my Great Grandmother telling me that Margaret’s stepfather was a Gossett. It was just a passing comment that I eventually followed up on. Glad I did since there isn’t much documentation to lead us to it.
Here is another bit of info she gave me about burials in New Hope Cemetery: (My notes in parenthesis)
“On right is Grandpa Gossett (Step father of James Harrison Bingham’s mother.)
On his left is, Aunt Lou Sanders, Hartford Sanders, and her son, Leonard.
James Harrison (Bingham)’s Mother and Gwendolyn Bingham at left of gate close to the fence.”
Another note on Henry Gossett – The following is from the diary of a local Dr. Godbey (Source: posted online by Sandy Gorin, the well-known researcher of Barren County, KY history):
From Dr. Godbey’s Diaries
Tuesday, April 16, 1912
Visited Henry Gossett, Sr. at Mr. Bingham’s. He is quite old, 93 years!
Claud broke up the garden. We got a letter from Hallie. I paid Claud one dollar to break up garden; paid Taylor one dollar, bal. on hauling corn. That makes us even, thank the Lord. We wrote Hallie a letter today.
So why was an application filed for a widow’s pension in 1910, which by the way was before he died? Was it thought a widowed veteran could file for a widower’s pension?

A lady in Kentucky had the family Bible; she shared it with another researcher who created Family Group Sheets which claimed to be based on the Bible record.
